The Boston Terrier, known as the "American Gentleman", was created by crossing an English Bulldog with a white English Terrier. Although originating from fighting dogs, today's Boston Terrier has a gentle disposition and it is ideally suited as a family pet. By temperament, it is lively and highly intelligent.
The Boston Terrier is compactly built, but elegant, with an average weight of 7 to 9 kilos, but not exceeding 11.4 kilos. It has a short, smooth and fine coat, and its characteristic colors are brindle, black or seal with white markings as shown in the drawing above. No special grooming beyond a regular bath and a quick daily brush is needed to maintain the coat in top condition. As a short-nosed breed, a Boston may suffer from labored breathing if it is strenuously exercised in hot weather.
The Boston Terrier is very popular in North America as well as Britain and Australia. The first Bostons came to Finland in 1955. Although the breed has a dedicated following in this country, the annual registrations have remained relatively low at around 50 dogs a year.
Boston Terrier fanciers have their own breed club which is affiliated with the Finnish Toy Dog Association.
